EST Reference Implementation
-----------------------------

  Fully-compliant with RFC 7030. Also has support for a
  openssl implementations with draft-ietf-tls-pwd-04
  support -- parlay a simple password/passphrase into 
  a certificate!

  Uses OpenSSL version 1.0.1g (and later) and libcurl
  version 7.34.0 (and later).

  Comments, questions, issues, etc should be directed

Organization
------------

  client -- contains cest, the client implementaiton of est.
  server -- contains sest, the server implementation of est.
  ca -- an RSA-based CA that can be used by the server.
  ecca -- an ECC-based CA that can be used by the server.

Building
--------

Tested on OSX, FreeBSD, and linux.

- ./configure [--with-ssl=<openssl-dir>] [--with-curl=<curl-dir>] [--enable-debug]
- make
- cd ca; ./genca; ./gensestcert; 
- cd ecca; ./genecca prime256v1; ./gensesteccert; 

(or secp384r1 or secp521r1 or any valid curve in openssl)

Both gensestcert and gensesteccert will enroll the server in the
appropriate CA. The resulting certificate is copied to the server
directory as sestcert.pem or sesteccert.pem, as the case may be.

Note: when generating the CA's certificate and the server's certificate
you will be prompted for the components of the DN. The CA's can be anything
you want. For the server, make the CN be the IP address of the interface
that it will be binding to-- for instance 127.0.0.1 if it's the loopback
or 69.55.226.174 if EST is running on www.lounge.org-- otherwise the
client's certificate validation check will fail (try it and see!)

Note well: if you are linking to the specific libraries for OpenSSL
and/or libcurl, that is if you use the --with-ssl or --with-curl
directives to configure, it will probably be necessary to set the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH (or OS-specific equivalent) to ensure those libraries
are dynamically loaded at run time. Weirdness ensues if you don't.
Try doing ldd on the executable to ensure it's doing what you think
it should be doing. If all else fails, build OpenSSL and libcurl
as static and invoke EST's configure with the [--enable-static] option.

Make sure that the OpenSSL distribution you're linking to for EST
is the same one that you linked to when building the curl distribution
you're linking to for EST otherwise things don't work right.

Running
-------

- start up a CA, either ca/ca or ecca/ecca
- start up sest (sest -help will give options)
- start up cest -u username -h hostname
        -p: port (default is 8443)
	-c: path to trust anchor database (a directory)
	-f: CA's cert (a file, if not using the -c option)
        -i: do not verify the server's certificate
        -r: use TLS-pwd (only included with TLS-pwd support)
        -t: use TLSv1 (default TLS_v1_2)
	-x: filename holding a PEM-encoded private key
	-y: filename holding a PEM-encoded certificate
	-k: let the server generate the private key
- see the ADDUSER file in server to see how to add new users
  for TLS-pwd and HTTP Digest authentication. Current test
  user is "fred" whose password is "barney". This account
  has been added for authentication using both HTTP Digest
  and TLS-pwd.
- the client uses an explicit trust anchor database (TADB.
  If the client connects to a server and is unable to validate
  the server's certificate due to lack of a trust anchor,
  and a TADB is indicated with the -c option, the server
  will prompt to add the CA certificate to the TADB.
- the client's explicit TADB can be populated manually by 
  putting the certificate to trust in the TADB directory with
  the file name of the certificate's subject hash. The subject
  hash of a certificate can be obtained thusly:

    % openssl x509 -in <cert.pem> -subject_hash -noout

  Make the filename of the certificate be its subject_hash
  and copy that file to the TADB.
- the server and client support the /csrattrs query and
  the attributes to use with such a query can be specified
  using an NCONF file (see OpenSSL documentation, or look
  at the example .nconf files in the server directory).
- ca and ecca are suitable only for testing purposes. They
  are not real CAs and should not be treated as such.

Note: the CA will not issue certificates with identical DNs. If
a certificate is obtained for 'fred' (or anyone else) using
cest and you try to run cest again for the same user, issuance
will fail. By using an NCONF file with sest it is possible to
instruct cest to include an attribute for serialNumber. The
client will use a random serial number in its DN which
will make unique DNs and avoid CA issuance failure on account
of duplicate names.

Note well: it's possible to misconfigure everything. For example,
have the server do ECC enrollment using the ECC CA but use a
certificate itself from the RSA CA. The client will never be
able to authenticate the server and will continually add the
ECC CA certifcate to the TADB. Make sure things are configured
in a correct and consistent manner. Edit server/sest.conf to set
defaults for your site.

Examples
--------

First start est/ca/ca and est/ecca/ecca to have CAs running
before you run sest or cest.

1. use the RSA CA, client does http digest authentication
   with the TADB at ./tadb  and produces verbose output;
   servers run on loopback.

  server: % est/server/sest
  client: % est/client/cest -u fred -h 127.0.0.1 -s -c ./tadb

2. use the RSA CA, client does cert-based authentication with
   the TADB at ./tadb; server runs on loopback and responds
   to /csrattrs queries using the NCONF file rsaattrs.nconf

  server: % est/server/sest -n rsaattrs.nconf
  client: % est/client/cest -u fred -h 127.0.0.1 -x <key.pem> -y <cert.pem> -c ./tadb

3. use the ECC CA, server defaults to prime256v1 and SHA256; client 
   uses TLS-pwd for authentication.

  server: % est/server/sest -y yes 
  client: % est/client/cest -u fred -h 127.0.0.1 -r

4. use the ECC CA, server specifies the secp384r1 curve and sha384 
   and responds to /csrattrs queries using the NCONF file ecattrs.nconf;
   client does TLS-pwd and prints out progress (not as verbosely as -s)

  server: % est/server/sest -y yes -x secp384r1 -h sha384 -n ecattrs.nconf
  client: % est/client/cest -u fred -h 127.0.0.1 -v -r

Edit server/sest.conf to set defaults if the existing ones are not appropriate.
