This package consists of the source and binary of 2 small programs needed for polymodem support on Linux. The first is installer. 1) Installer This program sends a sequence of commands to the both the Poly Modem and the Poly Basis, to set them up and initialize them. Its options are: -b <basis>, where <basis> is the license number found on the bottom of the polybasis, and looks like FGBCA95XYZ2 -m <modem> is the same as <basis> above, but it is the number on the bottom of the polymodem -s <serial port>, where <serial port> is the name of the port that the polymodem is attached to. Normally /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 -d provides more debugging output -h provides this information about the installer options. To use it, one would make sure that the polymodem is attached to the computer and run a command like ./installer -b FGBCA95XYZ2 -m FGBCA534HJK But with the correct license numbers from the undersides of the devices. 2) Polydriver The polydriver is a daemon, which means it runs in the background and sits quietly waiting for a program to initiate a modem connection. It uses the concept of a pty/tty pair. This means, that what ever is written to a tty can be read through the corresponding pty, and vice versa. In this case the polydriver opens /dev/ptyp1 (changeable with command line flags) and waits for a dialup program, such as ppp or minicom to open /dev/ttyp1, and use that as its modem device. When this occurs, polydriver opens the real serial port, and perfoms a bi-directional translation function, inserting and removing the polytrax protocol header as required. It is suggested that the polydriver run once at run time, the details of which are distribution dependant. Usually the actual polydriver binary would be placed in /usr/local/sbin and a script to start and stop it would be placed in /etc/init.d and a link to this script from the relevant /etc/rcN.d directorys be set up to enable the polydriver to start automatically from the desired runlevels. Once again, these details are distribution dependant, and polydriver has only been tested on debian and knoppix distributions. Its options are as follows: -b <basis> specifies the license number of the polybasis the same as for the installer above. -d enables extra debugging information to syslog. WARNING DEBUG REDUCES PERFORMANCE SEVERLY -f prevents polydriver from becoming a daemon and lets it run in the foreground. Only useful for testing and debugging. -h provides this information on command line options. -m <modem> specifies the license number of the polymodem -p <pty name> specifies the pty (and its corresponding tty) to use. /dev/ptyp1 and /dev/ttyp1 are used by default. -s <serial port> specifies the serial port that the polymodem is connected to. /dev/ttyS0 is the default. This does not need to be run as root, but it can be. LICENSE: This polydriver is licensed under the GNU Public License. You can read the license terms and conditions in the files LICENSE and gpl.txt MODIFICATIONS: This driver is to be considered alpha software. It is an early version still undergoing testing by us in house. New versions with improvements will be released from time to time. It is also expected that the community will help by testing and reporting bugs, fixing those bugs, and sending in patches so we can share the improvements with everyone. NOTE: This driver was developed without any specifications whatsoever, it was developed with a combination of guesswork and reverse engineering. This driver can never be considered official or complete until I can see the specifications of the protocol, which is no longer possible. The reference driver is the Windows 98 version, of which no source code is available. I have tried to make this driver perform as close to the windows 98 driver as possible, but nevertheless, its observed behavior is often different and/or unpredictable.
