• Q: which needs nomodeset? some intel cards, some with nouveau driver. how to detect? A: I found out that most open source drivers actually needs kms to drive hardware accelaration.

• kms api test (this may help to determine if nomodeset needed in kernel cmdline)
• generate snippet of xorg.conf and do X startup testing?
