Use mtdiag-launch, which as a setuid-root program does privileged
operations on mtdiag-qt's behalf. It also requires that you add
yourself to the "mtdiag-launch" group:

$ sudo groupadd mtdiag-launch
$ sudo usermod -a -G mtdiag-launch $USER
$ # Log all the way out (of X, etc.)
$ mtdiag-launch
