This is stuff to make Gentoo work with the Google CR48. 1. You need to flash the BIOS with a normal BIOS. Google that (yes you have to take it apart). 2. Install Gentoo as normal. You can choose x86 or x86_64. Both work in full. Use the kernel configuration here for x86_64. My recommendation is to create a blank image: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=file_16gb bs=14M count=1024 (or whatever you think is best) Then format it (probably need root): # fdisk file_16gb (and responses to fdisk) n p 1 w x # mkfs.ext3 file_16gb Now mount and install Gentoo as if this is the step where you get into the chroot. # mkdir /mnt/cr48 # mount file_16gb /mnt/cr48 See scripts/mount-file_16gb ! 3. When you are done building everything and everything looks okay, and this means kernel and kernel modules too, get the Sysresccd and put it onto a flash drive: http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_How_to_install_SystemRescueCd_on_an_USB-stick 4. Unmount the cr48 image! 5. Boot the CR48 with the flash drive. Kernel does not really matter as all we are doing is copying the image from your machine. 6. In the Sysresccd environment: a) Setup wireless either by stopping NetworkMangaer (/etc/init.d/NetworkMangaer stop) or running one of the options for X and setting up Wifi with NetworkMangaer within X. b) # passwd Get the IP # ifconfig Find the correct hard disk name, on my it is /dev/sda1 because I have the BIOS set to AHCI. # fdisk -l (find the correct 7. On your machine, begin copying the image (fix the file names): # dd if=file_16gb | ssh root@THE_IP 'dd of=/dev/sda1' 8. Wait! 9. Reboot the machine without the flash drive. 10. Hope it works. Getting the GPS and Modem (for use with Verizon) to work: The kernel must be patched first: # cd /usr/src/linux Find qcserial.c: # find . -name qcserial.c # vi path-to/qcserial.c Add these lines to the device list: {USB_DEVICE(0x1410, 0xa010)}, /* Novatel Gobi QDL device */ {USB_DEVICE(0x1410, 0xa011)}, /* Novatel Gobi QDL device */ {USB_DEVICE(0x1410, 0xa012)}, /* Novatel Gobi QDL device */ {USB_DEVICE(0x1410, 0xa013)}, /* Novatel Gobi QDL device */ {USB_DEVICE(0x1410, 0xa014)}, /* Novatel Gobi QDL device */ # make && make modules_install Install the kernel as you normally would. Make sure it works. If you built qcserial as a module, make sure it's listed in /etc/conf.d/modules. The firmware directory has files you need. Get the tarball onto your root however you like. In your root: # cp Qualcomm.tar.gz /opt # cd /opt # tar xvf Qualcomm.tar.gz # rm Qualcomm.tar.gz The etc directory has the udev rules to load the Gobi. Simply copy them where they belong. There are 2 modules you need to add (and you must have CONFIG_USB_SERIAL=y for them to work): # cd modules # cd Qualcomm/QCSerial2k # make && make install # cd ../QCUSBNet # make && make install Now add them to /etc/conf.d/modules like so: modules="${modules} QCSerial2k QCUSBNet2k" Reboot and it should start detecting these devices. To get Verizon to work, setup NetworkManager and make sure you can see Mobile Broadband as an option. Put the firmware onto your device (you need to do this on each reboot, unsleep, etc). See scripts/startthereg.sh. Run it as root. Set up NetworkManager: 1. Add new connection under the Mobile Broadband tab. 2. Choose United States. 3. Choose Verizon. 4. Phone number #777, user name a, password a. 5. Click OK. 6. Make it connect. It should work now. It's not fast and I do not know how long it lasts for.
