Menger Sponge iteration 3 rendered in V-Ray using Light Cache GI.

What is this?

A Maya plug-in that creates a menger sponge.

For more information, see the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menger_sponge

It has no practical application. But it can be useful for rendering tests and you don't want to render yet another Stanford Dragon.

The Menger Sponge of sufficient iterations provides quite a challenge for some Global Illumination algorithms too, if the only light source is in the center of the sponge in the largest cavity.

What can it do?

Currently create a sponge of any desired iteration, although for a fairly powerful 2013-era computer anything over 4 is painful for Maya.

What can it not do?

Undo and redo is not working yet.

Also note it builds the sponge from discrete cubes. It does not create one contiguous surface representing the sponge, but rather one mesh made up of (20 ^ iterations) many cubes. Support for generating a contiguous surface may be added in the future.

How do I build it?

  • On Linux, run the make file.
  • On Windows, use the MSVC projects (which might need custom edits.)

Well how do I use it?

Load the plug-in through Maya's plug-in manager.

Run the command:

createMenger -i $n -s $s

...where $n is number of iterations and $s is the length of one side of the final cube.
